Look Good, Feel Good

September 9, 2020

Doesn’t it sometimes feel like we’re surrounded by weight loss talk? So many people we encounter want to lose weight, whether it’s a few pounds or a major weight loss. For some of us, it’s about getting healthier; for others, it’s about looking good. And, of course, sometimes it’s both.

While getting healthy is the most important reason for losing weight, I also understand why people want to shed pounds to look good. After all, looking good can also make us feel good! But “looking good” shouldn’t mean trying to look like the people you see on TV or in magazine photos. Chances are those models and actresses have a different body type than you (and the photos are most likely photoshopped anyway!).

We all have different body types, and you can’t force something that’s not there genetically. Accept your body type—and aim forthe ideal healthy weight for YOUR body. That way, you’ll look good and feel good.

Here are more tips for looking good and feeling good:

Love and accept yourself. Stop all that negative talk in your head that prevents you from living your life, whether it’s not sexually engaging with your partner because you feel fat or not going to the beach with your friends because you hate how you look in a swimsuit.

Change your viewpoint. If you’re unhappy with your weight, tell yourself you have an opportunity to be a little healthier and ask yourself what you can do about that. It’s about saying “How can I be healthier? and NOT “How can I look skinnier?”

Empower yourself with the proper resources. Accountability is a key part of losing weight, so don’t keep your weight loss efforts a secret. Ask a few trusted friends and/or family members to help hold you accountable. On the flip side, I recommend avoiding saboteurs—those negative people who make comments about how bad you look or how you’ll never lose that weight. Get those people out of your life—or at least be aware of their effects on you. Surround yourself with the right people to make your weight loss story a success!
