As for options to cover the cost of your medication, we asked Rachel Haggard, PharmD, Customer Experience Center Pharmacist Manager at Belmar Pharmacy in Colorado, to help us answer the most common questions about insurance and ways to pay for your compounded prescriptions.

Q: Does medical insurance cover the cost of my compounded prescriptions?

A: As a compounding pharmacy, we do not bill your insurance. Most insurance companies do not cover custom medications since they are tailored specifically to an individual patient’s needs. Unlike commercial medications, compounds are not mass-produced as a one-size-fits-all formula. Instead, your provider is able to customize the dose you need in the form you need – such as a capsule, troche, fast-burst sublingual tablet, cream, gel, or even an injectable medication.

While in most cases, insurance doesn’t cover the cost of compounded medications, you, the patient, have the advantage of getting the specific dose and form you need for your individual health conditions. For many patients, compounded medications help improve their quality of life, so making them part of your monthly or yearly healthcare budget just makes sense.

Q: Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for compounded medications?

A: Yes. If you have a health savings account (HSA) or a flexible spending account (FSA), you should be able to use these tax-advantaged savings accounts for healthcare expenses, including personalized medications. Additionally, depending on your prescription (i.e., it’s not a controlled substance), you may be able to get a 30-, 60-, or even 90-day supply of medication that you pay for with one convenient payment, making it easier on your budget. .
