What is Liothyronine Sodium?

Liothyronine is a synthetic form of T3, the body’s active thyroid hormone, which normally comes from the conversion of T4 into T3 within the thyroid and peripheral tissues. Liothyronine may affect how genes are expressed and how proteins are made, which would raise the body’s basal metabolic rate, supporting normal growth and development, and helping drive processes like making glucose and releasing stored glycogen.

Because some adults and children do not achieve stable hormone levels or symptom relief with T4 alone, liothyronine may be used alongside synthetic T4 or as part of a personalized thyroid support approach that also includes options like porcine thyroid extract.
