What is Lidocaine / Tetracaine?

Lidocaine and tetracaine are local anesthetics that block voltage‑gated sodium channels to stop nerve impulses, combining lidocaine’s fast onset with tetracaine’s longer‑lasting effect to stabilize nerve membranes and limit pain signal transmission. This mixture is designed to provide deep, localized numbing with minimal systemic absorption and is commonly applied to the skin or mucous membranes for quick and extended analgesia during dermatologic and aesthetic procedures. This combination cream is also prescribed to address dyspareunia (painful vaginal intercourse) and vulvovaginal pain conditions like vaginismus or vulvodynia. These agents can temporarily reduce sensitivity for sexual problems common in women experiencing physical changes like vaginal tissue dryness. When applied vaginally 10-30 minutes prior to sexual encounters, numbing agents like lidocaine and tetracaine in low concentrations have been shown to locally ease intimate discomfort. The compound applied topically can also help reduce discomfort from minor burns, needle sticks, and laser treatments, giving both patients and clinicians a numbed area for various minor interventions.
