What is Cholestyramine?

Cholestyramine is a nonabsorbable resin that binds to bile acids in the intestine, forming stable complexes and releasing chloride ions while blocking the normal recycling of bile salts. By preventing their reuptake, it increases the fecal loss of bile salt–bound low‑density lipoprotein. It is commonly used to help lower elevated cholesterol levels and is also applied in situations involving bile acid–related diarrhea and itching from partial biliary obstruction. Cholestyramine can bind bacterial and mold related toxins in the gut and help remove them, reducing MCAS triggers. Because mast cells are so highly concentrated in the gut, GI irritation can continuously provoke a state of activation and worsen overall symptoms. Cholestyramine offers a versatile, non‑systemic option across lipid, gastrointestinal, and endocrine contexts.
