What is Dimercaptosuccinic Acid (DMSA) (Clear) MCC?

Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), is an oral chelating agent that binds to heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic by forming water‑soluble complexes that the body can excrete through the kidneys. As an analog of dimercaprol, it is thought to help remove toxic metals while having little effect on essential minerals like calcium and iron. After binding the heavy metals, chelators like DMSA help expedite the removal of these soluble complexes through the urine. DMSA has a role in managing exposure to both organic and inorganic heavy metals and offers a less invasive option for clearing toxic buildup compared to other chelation methods. Chelators may help remove the heavy metal from within the body, but these agents cannot reverse the established effects of previous exposure. Chelation therapy is also not a substitute for proper identification and removal of the toxic source.
